End of Day 1

Fred Carpenter and I left my house shortly after 7 a.m. and headed toward Columbus. The weather was ideal early on -- warm enough not to need any layers and hardly any wind. Columbus Highway remains quite beautiful thanks to all our summer rains.

A southwest wind gradually grew stronger, slowing us down somewhat for the last 20 miles or so to Columbus. We made it there before noon and filled up at the Patio Cafe. Fred turned around to return to El Paso (that would make it about 140 miles for him today).

Fred and I have a lot in common as far as biking. We both started biking seriously in the past two years, primarily to lose weight, and have become very addicted. Fred lost about 60 pounds. So far this year he has logged about 7,000 miles.

My wife, Cindy, caught up with me shortly after I took off north from Columbus for the 36 mile ride to Deming. I met up with her later this afternoon at our motel.

While getting ready for the next day, I noticed that my front tire had gone flat. At least it's a lot more convenient to fix a flat in a motel room than on the road.

Sunday: a short but windy ride to Silver City. 30 percent chance of rain.

Hi Randy,
Stay safe and dry. We drove home from Socorro NM early afternoon and it sure looked dark and rainy over the Gila!!! Hope you didn't get caught it it.
